Dear Portsmouth resident,

Three positive housing-related actions at the April 7 City Council meeting. Innovative co-living concept moves ahead [council discussion]. Housing Committee asked to identify key housing-friendly zoning reforms [discussion]. City asked to assess feasibility of City Hall Lower Lot for future housing [discussion]. Mary Loane reported on work of Housing Committee. Gerald Duffy and Bella Romero spoke to housing during public comment.

WHO CAN AFFORD HIGH-END MARKET RATE RENTALS?

We need a total of 2,897 new rentals and 227 owner units by 2030 (Housing Market Study p 47). We currently have only 312+/- permanently below-market units in the pipeline. The 1,400+ market-rate rental units in the works will be high-end — unaffordable for households earning less than $160,000. Lower- and mid-income residents will continue find housing unaffordable and some longterm residents will be forced out.
